Astro Engineering and Manufacturing specializes in the design and manufacture of auger and screw conveyors systems. While the majority of these screw conveyors have been stainless steel augers for the food industry we also manufacture systems in carbon steel and some exotic metals.

We specialize in providing customized auger solutions and build for each application. No inventory is carried. Lead time is usually 3-4 weeks, but can be shorter if you have your own prints and are ready for fabrication.

General Screw Conveyor Information



Screw conveyors, sometimes called augers, are used as an efficient way to move a wide variety of materials. The screw conveyor is one of the six simple machines that have been used for thousands of years to provide a mechanical advantage to get work done. Screw conveyors range in complexity from a simple motorized screw set in a trough, to an integral component of a complex material handling system.

Design Considerations



In designing a screw conveyor for a specific purpose, many questions must be answered in order to achieve optimal performance. Information needed would be: the material being conveyed, density in pounds per square inch, the desired volume, speed and distance that need to be conveyed. Other factors that can helpful to know are the abrasiveness, corrosiveness, or viscosity of the material to be conveyed. In answering those questions, the screw conveyor can then be designed with the appropriate metal, diameter, pitch, length, and trough and motor requirements.

Specialty Screw Conveyors can be Cost Saving in Production Use



While off the shelf solutions exist for many applications, when it comes to maximizing efficiency and performance, there are additional features that can be designed and built into the conveyor system that not everyone considers. An example of this would be the benefits achieved by regulating the temperature of the screw conveyor. For an application of cheese production, Astro Engineering and Manufacturing designed and built heated stainless steel screw conveyors to enhance movement of the fatty, viscous cheese in production. Alternatively, for frozen food processors, Astro built chilled-trough screw conveyors. The chilled screw conveyors help to keep the food in a semi-frozen condition during the dispensing operation. This aids in both providing a safe food product as well as energy savings in less refreezing of the food product.

Screw Conveyors for Food Processors



Astro specializes in screw conveyors for the food industry. Stainless steel with a food grade finish is the metal of choice. Either 304 or 316 stainless steel are most often used. Stainless steel screw conveyors provide the clean, non-corrosive surfaces required for food processing. No-tool dismantling for easy clean-out is a feature Astro has provided for its food processing clients. Down- time is costly in the food processing plant, and can be reduced when the dismantling and cleaning procedure is simple and fast. Regulating the temperature as discussed above, along with the ability for the screw to mix the product as it moves are features used by progressive food processors. Shape and placement of the inlet and outlet chutes for transitioning with other equipment is also essential to plan for in the design phase.

In Summary

Purchasing new plant equipment is expensive. Off-the-shelf solutions for screw conveyors may work well in many applications, however, the added investment required to custom design and build for a particular application can provide operational cost-saving benefits that greatly outweigh the convenience of a standard system.
